Online training

There are several excellent external resources available for bioinformatics training. See the links below.

Galaxy RNA-seq Tutorial: Galaxy provides several tools for performing RNA-seq analysis. This excellent tutorial introduces these tools (Tophat and Cufflinks) and guides use of these tools on an example dataset. Familiarity with Galaxy and the general concepts of RNA-seq analysis are useful for understanding this exercise. This exercise takes 1-2 hours to complete.

Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops 2011: Includes slides and video presentations from workshops given in 2011: "Exploratory Data Analysis and Essential Statistics using R", "Pathway and Network Analysis on – omics Data", "Informatics on High Throughput Sequencing Data", "Informatics and Statistics for Metabolomics", "Microarray Data Analysis", and "Bioinformatics for Cancer Genomics."

EBI Online Training: The European Bioinformatics Institute (the folks behind Ensembl) have a nice series of online training videos and course materials (course list). One of the more helpful courses is the EMBO Practical Course on Analysis of High-Throughput Sequencing Data that includes video lectures and course materials from an in-person workshop that took place at EBI in October 2011. The course starts with an introduction to R/Bioconductor, then covers statistical concepts, designs, and Bioconductor packages for analyzing ChIP-seq and RNA-seq data.

OpenHelix Free Tutorials: OpenHelix provides extensive tutorials and training materials on the most powerful and popular genomics resources. They have made their training materials (slides, handouts, video lectures) available at no cost for several resources (including a beginneradvanced, and supplemental tutorials on the UCSC genome browser).
